At the beginning of the day, I said to everyone: "No hiking or trekking." I just wasn't in the mood. I'm not up to the challenge.

The sound of a large explosion rousts my consciousness into awareness. As the rumbling from the explosion continues, I lie there in silence waiting for the building to collapse and crush me. For five long seconds, I'm scared.

Outside, I can hear a cacophony of car alarms and the muted howl of wind. Nothing has happened. A little late to the party.

I've spent a number of holidays away from home but none of them has revealed itself as poignant as Thanksgiving.  In America, Thanksgiving is ubiquitous.  In many respects, it's the most important holiday of the year as families make great effort to spend that day together.  This is the second time I've been away from family and friends for Thanksgiving.

With 20+C weather outside, Kampala is a lovely place filled with a cacophony of sounds, briliant sights and quite a bit of traffic.  Making our way along the crowded streets is a demonstration of the mass humanity filling Africa's cities.  Vehicles of all sizes, pedestrians and even the women balancing just about anything and everything on their heads.

After leaving my house at noon on Thursday, I finally arrived at my room in Kampala, Uganda at 3am on Sunday morning: a total travel time of 55 hours (including a stopover in Frankfurt, Germany). Finally got into bed around 5am and slept until 1:15pm to find myself in what is easily the highlight of my entire years worth of travels.

What's missing in Baltimore is an old school soda fountain kind of joint.  Not so in Mexico City where Neveria Roxy still maintains the flavors of the past. It's odd to me when I think upon how the New Zealand All Blacks have not won the Rugby World Cup in 24 years.  I always think of them as the greatest rugby team ever.  The ones we idolize and strive to emulate.  They were the baddest, toughest and most fierce team in the world.

Ever wonder how baggage gets lost in transit?  Especially in this world of "high security", TSA screenings and everything designed to "protect" us from harm, you'd think they would be able to track your baggage with a high degree of accuracy - not to mention that they now charge you for the "privilege" of checking your baggage.

Right before we went to Hamburguesas Montaner, Ana asked me if I had tried pambazos.  Of course, I've tried pambazos - that ubiquitous Mexico City bolillo sandwich that's sauteed in salsa rojo.  Actually, I've never had it here, only at the fabled Fiesta Mexicana in Baltimore, but it's pretty authentic.

But, as she noted, I hadn't had these pambazos.

Sometimes my day takes a slightly turn for the strange.

Perusing the latest issue of Cook's Illustrated, I came across their quick roast technique for roasted chicken and decided to give it a try.  The key is to heat a skillet first, placing the chicken on the skillet and the dark meat to cook with conduction while the rest of the bird is heated with convection.

I guess this is one of those signs that an era has truly passed.

We closed down main operations of Jays Shave Ice at the end of 2006.  For the next four years, Jays Shave Ice operated during the Artscape festival in downtown Baltimore.  2011 was the first Artscape that we missed in eleven seasons.  I was just tired.

Sometime today I started to lose it. Calculating the various details and expenses of each menu item was starting to get to me.  All around me a cacophony of activity carried on. According to what I've read, Blues BBQ is the best bbq in Charleston.  But read through the reviews and the comments and a bit of a controversy erupts.  Evidently, Blues BBQ pressure cooks their ribs.  To bbq purists this is akin to an uncircumsized Semite running through 1942 Berlin wearing a pig meat outfit.

The difficult part of visiting any city is finding someplace good to eat.  Truth be told, I'm really just like everyone else - I'm scared of finding something bad.  This is the same mentality that drives the masses to eat at Applebee's, Cheesecake Factory, Panera Bread and Burger King, no matter where they are in the world.

A few years ago while I was in Tokyo, I thought how cool it would be to own a MacBook with the Japanese characters on the keyboard.  I never did get around to buying a laptop there and I never thought about workflow using an unfamiliar keyboard.

I've written about this place before and it's still the best Tacos Al Pastor anywhere. Soft, juicy marinated pork with a slice of roasted pineapple - I dream of making pastor this good at home. So far, 2011 has been a busy year.  I've been back and forth to Central and South America, as well as southern North America several times.  My times at home have been short and it wasn't until last month when I actually had time to slow down and return to my roots, so to speak.

Granted, if I'm going to be "stuck" anywhere, Mexico City is about as ideal as it gets.

It's been about three and a half years since my first and last visit to El Vipsito (now called "El Vilsito" but I don't know why).  Quite simply, if you're looking for Tacos El Pastor in the DF, this is the place to go.

Nearly twice as expensive as other places, El Vilsito is rockin' when we arrive around 11pm. Mexico City. Just mentioning the name conjures all sorts of imagery.  Old castles, sunken lake beds, ancient Aztec civilizations, tacos, quesadillas, Bella Artes, just to name a few.

Yes, THAT Costco.  The one of large warehouses stacked with all your home goods. In bulk. Where to eat.

Somewhere to the west, about 35 minutes outside of Mexico City is a recreation area known as La Marquesa.  Different "Valles" offer a range of outdoorsy things to do, like horseback riding, ATV racing, water slides and quite a bit more.  There's even this thing they call Gotcha that looks suspiciously like paintball.

It's my birthday and I've returned to Mexico City for a few days of what supposedly is R&amp;R (rest &amp; relaxation) but really is R&amp;R (Run &amp; Run Faster).  The weather is lovely but the traffic is at its' worst.  Everywhere we go, the traffic is jammed and very slow moving.  If I didn't have mucho experience with Manila traffic, I might get a little crazy.

While in Esteli touring the cigar factory with Pete Johnson, I spied a box for the Verite 2009 line of cigars.  He told me about his approach to using tobacco leaf from one farm and one harvest to create a vintage line in the manner of wine production. Years ago, I used to teach 6 to 12 year olds.  It could be tough work, trying to hold the attention of youngsters for an hour at a time.  But nothing could be more brutal than instructing high school teenagers.

It's 6:30 in the morning and both my alarm clock and iPhone are honking.  For some reason, I always feel tired before media appearances, no matter the media.  This time, it's off to Channel 2 for an appearance on Good Morning Maryland and I need to shower and get myself ready.

It was an industry friend calling to tell me that the coffee company he works for no longer will sell my company coffee.

Turns out that the company he works for is unhappy with the way we have been representing their coffee at The Spro.  The company?  Counter Culture Coffee.

After a morning in the valley visiting old haunts Location Sound and Birns &amp; Sawyer (where I've spent way too much money on production equipment), I've found my way to Hollywood for a visit with Pete and Andy at Tatuaje Cigars.

When it comes to interesting interior design in the coffee business, I think Intelligentsia has done some truly interesting things over the past four years.  From Silver Lake to Venice Beach and now the new Pasadena location, the design has been interesting and even innovative.

Sometimes even chain restaurants get it right and the Shin-Sen-Gumi chain is one of them.  Great tasting Japanese cuisine all across the L.A. area.  We've been to the Gardena location before and this time the girls were in the mood for the shabu shabu teriyaki combination of their Monterey Park location.  Enjoy.  It was tasty.

Driving along the 101 South back to Los Angeles, I'm again struck by the immensity of the agriculture here on the West Coast.  Miles and miles of crops - as far as the eye can see. Our ability to maintain a continuous food stream for our nation is staggering.

The problem with short trips is that you feel like you're trying to cram too much into too little time.  Thank goodness Ethel and Matt were willing to come up to Napa to hang for a couple of hours. I had been following the writing of Chef Brett Emerson's exploits for quite some time and the last time I was in San Francisco, I emailed him to see if his battle to open Contigo had been won.
